We have two bargains from lesser-known manufacturers in our shortlist. The Viewpia LC-32IEE4 32" has a fine set of rave customer reviews - here's a couple of snippets: 'It is a fantastic TV for a low price, and you won't be disappointed', and 'Friends of mine have spent a lot more money than this on LCDs and have been disapointed with theirs. I'm not disapointed at all'. The Humax LDE-40A 40" Black hasn't had quite so many reviewers, but gets strong feedback too: 'It plays all of my media devices with perfect sound and display', and 'The TV is very good build quality and the picture is crystal clear'.

For a 26" HD Ready LCD TV, we go for the Philips 26PF5521D 26" Freeview. It is packed with features, is made by a major manufacturer, and also has a lot of rave reviews. Snippets: 'Virtual surround sound terrific', 'Watching HD-DVDs and playing HD games (via an XBOX 360) is outstanding. The image is crystal clear and the colours are amazing'.

To round out the 32" sets, we've got the Sony Bravia KDL32U2000 32" Freeview and the Toshiba 32C3030 32" Freeview Black. The Sony Bravia KDL32U2000 32" Freeview is available for a very good price, making it a very close call between it and the Samsung LE32R87BDX 32" Freeview to be our Best Buy. We feel that the Samsung just has the edge because of its newer technology. And then there's the new Toshiba 32C3030 32" Freeview Black, which has excellent reviews and is available at much the same price - in fact, it's even been available for £310 from one of amazon's merchants.

For the next size up, 37", we go for the Toshiba 37C3030 37" Freeview Black. It has a very good price for such a big TV, packed with features, from a top-notch manufacturer. Comment from an Amazon reviewer sums it up: 'I'm running the TV using only Freeview at the moment and the picture quality is superb compared to my old 28" JVC CRT. Seems crazy to spend the prices Sony and Sumsung are charging for equivalent TVs, and trust me, I've stood in numerous show rooms and seen them all side by side in their various states and the Tosh equially matches them on picture and build quality.'

For 40" we've got three sets. The Samsung LE40N73BDX 40" Freeview Black is a high quality, reasonably-priced set: 'The picture quality is out of this world, Sound quality is excellent,The set as a whole was Magnificent and i will reccomend this product for any future buyer'.

The final two sets are both 1080p, and are trumpeted as being 'Full HD'. If you have the means to get 1080p video (PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 perhaps ?), then you'll get the best home viewing possible from these sets. For around £1000, there's the Samsung LE40M87 40" 1080P Freeview, which gets stunning reviews: 'Absolutely fantastic TV', 'The picture is rather good - I've not seen anything better'. If you want the Sony brand and build quality, then go for the Sony KDL40X2000U 40" Bravia 1080P Freeview, which comes with S-PVA. Nice reviewer quotes: 'I do think the price is worth paying as you really will be blown away buy it's quality' and 'The sound is fantastic with great depth and fine detailing, for such narrow speakers the bass is mind blowing'. For the same price though, you could get the equivalent Samsung LE40M87 40" 1080P Freeview and a Sony Bravia KDL32U2000 32" Freeview for the bedroom.
