If you want a basic DVD Player, but want one from a well-known brand then we suggest the Philips DVP3020/05. Like the Compacks DVD6972 it has Multi Region capability. It costs almost twice the price, but has very good customer reviews.

The other shortlisted DVD Players all come with HDMI. If you have HDTV, then you'll get better picture quality with HDMI, so you should really buy one of these instead of one of the cheaper models. Our HDMI Best Buy is the Samsung DVD-HD870. It has excellent reviews, and has a very reasonable price. Not surprisingly, it is selling extremely well. Here's a snippet from an Amazon review: 'I am using a HD cable and it has made a marked difference to the viewing quality.....Highly recommended'.

The Sony DVP-NS76H is also selling well, even though it is about £20 more than the Samsung DVD-HD870. That's the power of the Sony brand for you. It get excellent reviews too - example 'the clarity of the picture was just stunning'.

You'll notice that the price tag of the final shortlist DVD Player, the Toshiba HD-E1, is much higher than the rest. That's because it's an HD DVD Player, capable of playing HD DVDs, not just upscaling ordinary DVDs like the Samsung DVD-HD870 and Sony DVP-NS76H. If you want to take the step into the next-generation DVD technology, this is the machine for you.
